Crawford Door Operator
I saw this old garage door opener in a ranch in Oak Park, Michigan that was built in the mid-60s. The house had an attached garage but no door directly to the house which I found odd. I had never seen a garage door opener this old or unique so I had to take a few pictures of it. I’m glad I did because on my follow-up visit this unit had been replaced.
Crawford Door Operator Model CR-87, CR-88
Serial #3992
Ecorse, MI
I tried to do some research on Crawford but I wasn’t able to turn up much information and I couldn’t find any pictures of similar units. If anyone can offer some more details on this company I’d love to hear about it.
I have one too. CR-67 CR-68 model. Belt driven from 1969. I use it every day since I bought the house in 1995. I am assuming the belt is original. I need a new one and have no idea where to find one.
My belt cover is missing though.
Jayson,
I love the look of those units. Not something that you see too much. Finding a new belt is going to be a challenge I bet. You may want to give Crawford Door a call if you haven’t already. I think they may actually be the same company because according to their website they’ve been in business since 1936. http://www.crawforddoorypsi.com
Hopefully that is helpful. Thank you for the comment.
I called them. It is them and to quote the man I spoke with, “That’s why don’t make those no more. They last too long.” He told me to go to a hardware store. I will.
Thanks for your help.
Jayson,
My pleasure. Good luck with the fix.
Just today i worked on a very similar Crawford model that a customer of mine has .I have been servicing this opener for several years now and told my customer when the day comes that we will have to replace it i would like to have it to display in my shop.
Jay,
It really is a cool unit. It’s a testament to the quality build that they are still in use out there. I’m glad you plan on displaying it when it goes instead of trashing it. Where are you based out of if you don’t mind me asking?
Good insight Jay. I’ve got the same model I’m looking for a remote for. Do you know if a universal style remote will work with this unit? Thanks a ton in advance!
I have one still in service. Home was built in 1967. I am looking for instructions on how to set the adjustments for up and down sensitivity. Maybe I should just call Crawford.
A Gates belt is a replacement I’ve used. 1/2 x 29″ FPH
LJ,
I wish I could help you with the sensitivity adjustments. Hopefully someone else will chime in if they have any info on it. I appreciate you noting the replacement belt that you’ve used. I’m sure that information will be useful to others. Thanks for the comment.
